History of Japan

Japan has had a number of unique historical periods, including the Heian period (794-1185), during which the imperial court moved to Kyoto and Japanese culture reached its zenith. During the Kamakura period (1185-1333), power passed to the samurai, who ruled the country until the Edo period (1603-1868).

During the Edo period, Japan was isolated from the rest of the world, but still underwent numerous internal changes. In 1868, the Meiji Restoration marked the beginning of a new era of modernisation, during which Japan developed into an industrial and military power.

Today, Japan is a constitutional democracy, with one of the largest economies in the world and a popular culture that exerts great influence worldwide.

Kyoto, the ancient capital of Japan, is known for its beautiful temples and gardens. The city also hosts many traditional festivals, including the Gion Matsuri, one of Japan’s most famous festivals.
